- We have a special Saturday morning seminar by Scott Meyers, whose
- first book, Effective C++, was a landmark as a C++
- style writing guide. His new book, "More Effective C++" is now
- coming out. It covers material not in his first book and includes
- many of the newer language features.
-
- ADV C/C++ SIG presents:
-
- SCOTT MEYERS, author
-
- TOPIC: DOUBLE DISPATCHING SATURDAY, JAN 27, 10 A.M.
-
- Double dispatching -- writing a function that behaves "virtual" based
- on the dynamic type of *two* objects -- is a useful construct that
- is,
- alas, not supported by C++. In this talk, I describe several
- approaches to the implementation of double dispatching, and I examine
- the advantages and disadvantages of each. I conclude that there is
- no perfect solution to the problem, but trying to find one leads to
- insights into class design, the implementation of virtual functions,
- the perils of casting functions pointers, and several other aspects
- of C++. We'll even get a chance to play with the STL.
-
- The material in this talk is taken from "More Effective C++: 35 New
- Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs," Addison-Wesley, 1996.
